The difference between additional work and overtime

In the business environment, we often encounter the terms additional work and overtime, but many people confuse them or do not know the exact differences. Although both imply additional engagement of the employee, they differ significantly in terms of purpose and compensation.

WHAT IS ADDITIONAL WORK?

 Additional work is work that an employee performs in addition to their main job. This work can be performed by another employer or by the same employer.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS:

- Additional work is agreed upon with the same or another employer;

- Additional work can be arranged only if the employee already has a full-time job under an employment contract;

- It can last up to 20 hours a week;

- Compensation is determined by the contract between the employee and the employer.

WHAT IS OVERTIME WORK?

Overtime work refers to work performed by an employee after their regular working hours in order to complete tasks that are part of their employment contract.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS:

- Overtime work is introduced by the employer where the employee already works;

- Overtime is introduced due to an increase in the volume of work, due to urgent and unavoidable situations;

- For overtime, the basic salary is increased by at least 40% per hour.
