Right to child benefit: How to claim it and what is required?

Any child up to the age of 18 or until the finishing high school can claim the child benefit. This right is particularly important for families with multiple children: families with five children are eligible for this benefit (exceptions are children born as twins, triplets, etc.).

The current child benefit amounts to 30 euros per child.

WHERE AND WHEN TO APPLY?

The application for child benefits should be submitted to the Center for Social Work based on the residence of the parent and child. The right to benefits is recognized on the first day of the following month from the date of application.

FOR EXAMPLE: If you apply in October, the right to benefits is granted in November, and the first payment will be made between the 15th and 20th of December.

WHAT DOCUMENTATION IS REQUIRED?

When submitting the application for child benefits, you need to provide:

• A personal ID card (for Montenegrin citizens) or a Residence permit (for foreigners) for both the parent and child.

• A birth certificate for all children in the family. For foreigners, the certificate must be translated by a court interpreter.

WHO CAN APPLY?

The holder of the right to child benefits can be a parent, adoptive parent, guardian or foster parent. The person submitting the application will also receive the benefit payments.

METHOD OF PAYMENT?

The payment is made through the Post of Montenegro, and the benefit can be collected by the holder of the right with their personal ID or residence permit. If necessary, the benefit may be delivered to the home address by the postman.

WHO CAN CLAIM THE CHILD BENEFIT?

Montenegrin citizens residing in Montenegro, foreigners with approved temporary or permanent residence, asylum seekers, and foreigners under subsidiary protection are eligible for the child benefit.
