Health insurance for foreigners in Montenegro: Everything you need to know

Health insurance is a crucial part of life for every individual, and for foreigners residing in Montenegro, understanding the available options can be essential. Whether you have temporary or permanent residence, it's important to familiarize yourself with the process to ensure your right to health insurance.

Below, we provide all the necessary information regarding the entitlement to health insurance.

WHO HAS THE RIGHT TO HEALTH INSURANCE?

Foreigners who have been granted temporary or permanent residence in Montenegro can access health insurance. To do so, they need to register with the Health Insurance Fund.

IMPORTANT: SIMPLY PAYING CONTRIBUTIONS WILL NOT AUTOMATICALLY ENTITLE YOU TO INSURANCE; YOU MUST SUBMIT A SPECIAL APPLICATION TO THE HEALTH FUND FOR REGISTRATION FOR HEALTH INSURANCE.

In addition to themselves, a foreigner can also register their spouse and children, thereby ensuring health protection for the entire family.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION

To apply for health insurance, you must submit the following documentation:

In addition to the above documentation, it is important to attach Proof of deregistration from health insurance in your home country for each insured person.

DURATION OF HEALTH INSURANCE

After extending your residence permit, you must re-submit the Application for health insurance for the duration of the new residence permit.

In other words, health insurance is terminated upon expiration of the residence permit.

ALTERNATIVE HEALTH INSURANCE OPTIONS

Another way to obtain health insurance is to purchase a policy from one of the insurance companies in Montenegro, such as Lovćen Osiguranje, Unika, or Generali. These policies provide access to health services in private or public institutions and allow foreigners to safeguard themselves in case of medical needs.

HEALTH INSURANCE COSTS

Insurance policy prices can vary depending on several factors, including the insured person's age, the number of insured individuals, and the chosen insurance package. We recommend exploring various options to find the one that best fits your needs and budget.

DURATION OF INSURANCE POLICY

The insurance policy lasts until the expiration of the period for which it was issued, after which it can be renewed. It is essential to monitor expiration dates to ensure continuity of health protection.
