Employment of foreigners based on a residence permit in Montenegro

Hiring foreigners in Montenegro may seem complex, but with the right information and support, the process becomes much simpler. As a foreign citizein, there are two main ways you can legally work in Montenegro: through a work permit or a permit based on family reunification.

1. Employment Based on a Work Permit

A work permit is issued based on a job offer that a foreigner receives from a Montenegrin company. Employment of foreigners under a work permit starts from the day the residence permit is issued and lasts until its expiration.

• Working hours: Employment must be full-time (8 hours per day).
• Employment duration: Employment lasts until the residence permit expires, meaning both the employer and employee must follow the validity periods of the permit.

2. Employment Based on Family Reunification

A foreigner can start working based on a permit obtained through family reunification, but only after one year from the start of the validity of their first residence permit.

• Working hours: Working hours can be part-time (2, 4, or 6 hours) or full-time (8 hours per day).
• Employment duration: There is no minimum employment duration, but it cannot last longer than the current period of validity of the residence permit.

3. Employment of Foreigners with a Property Ownership Permit

It’s important to note that owning property in Montenegro does not give the right to employment. Foreigners with a residence permit issued based on property ownership cannot use this permit for employment.
